Allergy testing. What is it? How does it work? How long does it take? Is it accurate? What does it detect? Can anyone get it done? -- Are these some of the questions you have floating around in your mind? You’re in the right place for answers! Many people are curious about allergy testing or have even undergone this testing before. In fact, about 2.5 million Canadians suffer from food allergies alone, not including seasonal or environmental allergies. In the following article we will answer some of these questions about allergy testing and if you have further questions, contact our new allergy clinic opening June 3rd!

What Is an Allergy Test?

An allergy test is used when someone has a severe reaction to a certain food, medicine, pollen, etc. These tests are used to confirm or rule out a possible serious allergy. They are typically performed by placing various allergenic substances onto the skin, usually on the forearm or back. These tests could either find the correct medication or rule out unnecessary treatments for the reaction that is occurring. People often consult with their doctor and get referred for an allergy test to receive a diagnosis.

Why Should You Get an Allergy Test?

Getting an allergy test will rule out intolerance and verify that you do or do not have an allergy to a certain allergen. When making the choice to get an allergy test, you should always consider the outlook.

The saying, “It’s better safe than sorry,” fits well for this. It is better to be safe and get the test to find a solution rather than having a terrible reaction occur.

Who Should Get an Allergy Test?

We will perform environmental and food allergy tests in our allergy clinic on patients 12 years and up. If you are having a reaction, an allergy test would be right for you. Watch out for the typical signs of an allergic reaction. These include swelling, shortness of breath, itching, nausea or dizziness. Symptoms typically come on suddenly if it is an allergic reaction and tend to be slower and less severe if it is an intolerance.

Where Should You Get an Allergy Test Done?

Get your allergy test done at our new Allergy Clinic with Dr. Nikhil Joshi! Here at Advanced Respiratory Care Network, we are focused on improving your health. Not only do we offer allergy testing but other services that could also help improve the way you live.

If you have questions about allergy testing, feel free to contact us today. Otherwise, call now to set up your appointment and get the answers you deserve so that you can live your life worry-free and protected.
