Level 3 Sleep Studies

Not all sleep studies need to be done in a specialized sleep lab facility. At Advanced Respiratory Care Network, we also offer level 3 sleep studies, which are performed using a portable sleep monitor. A portable sleep monitor allows you to perform your sleep study in the comfort of your own home in your own bed to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of a portable sleep test, please reach out to us about booking a consultation.

How Level 3 Sleep Studies Work

Like all sleep studies, you’ll need a referral from your physician to take part in a level 3 sleep study with a portable sleep monitor. Once you’ve received a referral, your sleep technician will set up a machine for you to use at home for one night. This machine records many of the same body functions as a laboratory sleep study, including:

  • Oxygen saturation
  • Heart rate
  • Air flow and effort
  • Snoring
  • Sleeping position

Your technician will make sure you know how to set up and use the machine once you’re at home. It’s important to use the monitor as directed, and then return it to the facility the next day to ensure the data can be downloaded and reviewed by your physician.

Level 3 Sleep Study FAQs

Does a Portable Sleep Test Monitor My Sleeping?

No. This is a common misconception. Portable sleep monitors test and evaluate your breathing as you sleep. These tests do not determine the quality of your sleep. Instead, the test provides your physician with key data about how you breathe while you sleep. This is critical to helping your doctor diagnose sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea.

Does My Doctor Need to Prescribe Portable Sleep Test?

While a portable sleep test is not as invasive as a sleep lab test, you still need a prescription from your doctor for the test to be administered.

How Do I Set Up a Portable Sleep Test?

When you’re ready to go to sleep, you will need to place the sensors correctly to make sure you record data. This includes:

  • A sensor on your finger to measure your oxygen saturation levels
  • A mask with tubes to measure your breathing
  • Sensors on your chest that will also measure your breathing rate

A sleep technician will walk you through setting up your machine for the test and how to place the sensors to ensure you receive accurate results.
