Can Plants Help You Sleep Better?

If you're looking for a way to get better sleep while adding some nice room decorations at the same time, this blog is for you.

Plants Blog

It may come as a surprise that a few plants could provide you with a more relaxing and restful night’s sleep, but it’s true! Not only are plants a great home décor addition to any room, but they have air-purifying properties, absorb toxins, give off a relaxing fragrance, and can help you breathe easier at night. If you’re looking for a way to get better sleep while adding some nice room decorations at the same time, this blog is for you.

1. Bamboo Palm

By placing a bamboo palm plant near your window, your room will already have a warmer and cleaner feel. They’re ideal for purifying airborne toxins, raising humidity and reducing sinus issues. Plus, they make for great floor décor!

2. Aloe Vera

Adding a few aloe vera plants to your shelves will increase oxygen levels which improves breathing. Keep in mind that aloe vera needs around 6 hours of direct sunlight each day, so if your room is in the basement or doesn’t get much sun it might be best in a room with more windows.

3. Passion Flower

Not only are these flowers bold in color and great for shelf décor, but they’re known to relieve anxiety and insomnia. They have a soothing scent that can improve your mood by providing effects similar to the anxiety-relieving drug, Oxazepam.

4. Snake Plant

This plant is easy to care for and great for filling those empty corners of a room. By filtering trichloroethylene and benzene from the air, snake plants are great for increasing oxygen and providing you with more restful sleep.

5. Lavender

Lavender is known for its relaxing qualities and stress-relieving scent. If taking care of a plant isn’t something you’re very interested in, lavender-scented essential oils can be used in a diffuser to give you the same positive effects as the plant would. Smelling lavender before bed allows you to experience deeper sleep, feel more relaxed and wake up more energized in the morning.

6. Gardenia

This flower is known as a great natural alternative to sleeping pills like Ambien, providing you with uninterrupted sleep so you can wake up feeling refreshed. Gardenias emit a fragrant, fresh smell that is great for reducing stress levels, too.

7. English Ivy

If you struggle with nighttime allergies, adding an English ivy to your shelves is a great choice. They are known to reduce airborne mold and feces while even alleviating asthma symptoms. This plant is toxic if ingested, so make sure you keep it out of reach from kids and animals.

8. Valerian

Not only are valerian flowers beautiful, but they also provide a peaceful scent that helps you fall asleep quickly. If you struggle with insomnia, adding this plant near your bed will help combat those frustrating sleepless nights.

Before you reach for the sleeping medication, try adding a few plants to your shelves and windows and see the positive impact they can have on your night. It’s possible that your sleep issue calls for more professional help, though. If you’re struggling to get to the bottom of your sleep problem, we offer sleep testing and personal sleep consultations to lead you towards a diagnosis. Contact us to learn more!
