24 or 48 Hour Holter Monitoring

Holter monitoring is a portable device that is worn continuously for 24 or 48 hours to record the heart's rhythm and rate during normal activity. These are typically done to gather more information that a routine EKG (electrocardiogram) can't give them. During the testing period, small conducting patches are stuck onto your chest and attached to a small recording monitor that you carry in a pocket or small pouch. It’s important to keep the device close to your body at all times to get a good read and to avoid getting wet during your testing period.

How to prepare for the test

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any tapes or other adhesives. Make sure you shower or bathe before you start the test and schedule your appointment during a time that you will not be doing any strenuous activity as they want a normal read during this period.

The Results

The Holter monitor test is analyzed by your doctor upon completion. Results can detect an abnormal rhythm which could in turn change your medicine or reveal a heart condition that could need further treatment.
